Mill base pieces and top supports

  • Cut four pieces of rough sawn white oak 32 in. x 6 in. width for the bottom base, or of a wood species of choice.
  • Cut two pieces of rough sawn white oak 24 in. length x 6 in. width for the top support pieces.
  • Using your jointer, flatten one face and one side perpendicular on each piece. (Pic 1A)
  • Run each opposite face through the planer to a uniform thickness of 3/4 in. (Pic 1B)
  • On the table saw, trim each bottom base board to a width of 5 1/2 in. and top support pieces to a width of 4 1/2 in. (Pic 1C)
  • Trim ends of pieces on table saw using miter gauge to give clean edges. (Pic 1D)

Drill dowel holes for jointing bottom pieces.

  • Determine desired grain pattern when joining bottom pieces (Note: Be sure grain patterns are running opposite directions for the glue up.) (Pic 2A)
  • Line up all boards in order for the glue up, mark all places for the dowels at center and 10 1/2 in. left and right of centers. (Pic 2B)
  • Using the Milescraft Joint Pro, follow manufacturer instructions  and drill all corresponding dowel holes. (Pic 2C)
  • Align Joint Pro on each line and drill out all three holes per location for added joint strength. (Pic 2D) (Tip: Dry fit all dowel holes and slightly enlarge all holes if necessary to allow for glue expansion during glue up.)
  • Once all dowel holes are drilled and test fitted, dry assemble entire panel to ensure proper fitting and adjust accordingly if necessary. (Pic 2E)

Glue up bottom panel

  • Align all bottom panel pieces for glue up. (Pic. 3A)
  • Using a waterproof wood glue, apply to all joint edges and into dowel holes. (Pic. 3B)
  • Spread glue thoroughly and insert dowels. (Pic 3C)
  • Clamp all pieces together creating one single panel. (Pic 3D) (Tip: Use cauls clamped across top and bottom of joints to help keep panel flat.) (Pic. 3E)
  •  Apply clamp on joint edges and across it’s width. (Pic 3F)
  • Wipe all excess squeeze out along all joints to help when sanding.

Sand and trim to final dimensions

  • Remove bottom panel from clamps after glue is fully cured.
  • Sand bottom panel and top supports at 80 grit. (Pic. 4A)
  • Using Milescraft Tracksaw Guide on the circular saw, trim each end of panel to final overall length of 30 in. (Pic. 4B)
  • Mark top pieces length to match the panels width of 22 in. and cut each support to that length. (Pic. 4C)

Drill fastener holes

  • Clamp top supports in place flush across each end and sides of the panel.(Pic 5A)
  • Mark fastener positions for securing top supports to panel. Four top and four bottom fasteners, locate each mark center on each bottom panel board and 1 1/2 in. from top support edge. (Pic 5B)
  • For each handle mark at 2 1/4 in. splitting top support’s width and centering along it’s length.(Pic 5C)
  • Mark bottom four corners 1 1/4 in. from length and width of each corner and predrill with 1/8 in. drill bit for the feet. (Pic. 5D)
  • Predrill and countersink screw holes for top supports to proper depth for 1 1/4 in. screws, attach top support to the bottom panel. (Pic 5E) (Note: Be careful not to drill completely through piece.)
  • For handle holes, drill completely through piece with 9/64 in. drill bit to allow machine screws to pass through and secure handle to the piece. (Pic 5F)
  • Countersink handle screw holes on under side to hide machine screw head. (Pic. 5G)

Edge profile, sand, and glue up

  • Using 1/8 in. round over bit, route edge profile all exposed edges. (Pic 6A)
  • Unscrew top pieces from the bottom panel.
  • Sand all pieces through grits 80/150/220. (Pic 6B)
  • Apply the waterproof glue, align, screw and clamp top supports to the bottom panel. (Pic. 6C)
  • Glue 3/8 in. walnut plugs in top and bottom screw holes in place. (Pic 6D)
  • After glue cures, flush saw excess plugs. (Pic 6E)
  • Touch up sand plugs and top support glue seams to 220 grit. (Pic 6F)

Apply finish to piece

  • Vacuum and wipe down all pieces.
  • Apply coat of preferred finish, for this piece Rubio Monocoat PreAging Fumed Light as first coat is chosen, according to manufacture instructions. (Pic 7A)
  • After Preaging Fumed Light fully dries, apply Rubio Monocoat Oil2C Walnut according in instructions or preferred color or an alternative finish. (Pic 7B)
  • Let piece sit for finish to fully cure.

Attach handles and feet

  • After finish cures, attach rubber bottom support feet. (Pic. 8A)
  • Attach top handles to each side. (Pic. 8B)
  • Project is now complete, enjoy your new stove top cover.
