Wooden Seed Shelving Stand

Choose Your Space
Start by deciding where your shelving stand will go and measure the area carefully. For the best results, place it near a window that gets at least four hours of sunlight each day. Or install a grow light when you’ve finished assembling this stand. If placing near a door, remember to account for the space needed to open the door!
Measure & Cut Lumber
For this seed starting wood stand, the shelves are spaced 24 inches apart. This allows 3 inches for a grow light and 3 inches for the height of the container. The remaining 18 inches of space allows room for the seedlings to grow.
For example, consider a stand measuring 50”H × 24”W × 18”D. For each shelf you build, use untreated 2×4 lumber cut to size as outlined below:
• Cut three 24-inch planks for the shelf surfaces
• Cut two 24-inch pieces for the shelf frame width
• Cut two 18-inch pieces for the frame depth
• Cut four legs to stretch from the bottom shelf to the top of the highest shelf
Tip: Lightly sand all pieces using the SandPlane™ before assembly. If you plan to paint or stain the wood, it’s easiest to do this before putting the stand together.
Assemble the Shelf Frames
To create each shelf frame, join two 24-inch pieces to two 18-inch pieces at the corners using 2 1/2-inch screws. Pre-drill pilot holes to make the corners easier to attach and to prevent the wood from splitting.
If you prefer a cleaner, stronger joint, pocket hole screws with a PocketJig400™ work perfectly. The PocketScrewKit700™ includes a variety of screws so you’ll have the right type for the job.
Add the Shelf Frames
Attach the three 24-inch planks to the top of each shelf frame with 1 1/4-inch screws. Leave small gaps between the boards to let air circulate around your plants. This helps keep seedlings healthy and reduces the risk of mold or other issues caused by excess moisture.
Attach the Legs
Once all the shelves are ready, lay the stand on its side and attach two legs with 2 1/2-inch screws. Flip the shelving stand over and attach the other two legs the same way.
If you’re adding wheels or casters, install them before standing the stand upright, following the manufacturer’s directions. Your shelving stand should now be sturdy and ready to support your indoor garden!
